LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- Lafayette's fire chief says the apartment where a woman was killed in 1989 had been set ablaze and the smoke alarm ripped out.

Fire Chief Robert Benoit was a fire investigator in 1989. The Advertiser reports that he testified Wednesday he found 19-year-old Christine Wood's body in her bedroom, wrapped in towels and clutching a pillow.

Forty-four-year-old Daniel Harmon has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Wood was shot three times in the head, and DNA shows Harmon had sex with her. Defense attorney Alfred Boustany argued Tuesday that authorities haven't proven it was Harmon's DNA -- or that he killed Wood.

Harmon was convicted of rape and aggravated kidnapping in 1994 in Tennessee.
