A new report from the TBI shows the number of law enforcement officers assaulted in the line of duty went up slightly last year.
One police officer was killed in the line of duty. He worked for the Memphis Police Department.
More than 1800 assaults were reported, most with no injuries or only minor injuries. That's a 3.1% increase over 2011.
Personal weapons such as hands and feet were most commonly used, accounting for nearly two thirds of all assaults. Firearms were used nearly 10% of the time.
The largest percentages of the incidents reported happened on the weekends. More than 39% happened in the evenings, between 6 pm and midnight.
