A Knox County family wants answers after they say they saw someone run over their dog and take off.

Lou Donovan's one-year-old boxer named Mattie died on impact.

It happened on Wyrick Rudder Road in the Mascot community in northeast Knox County.

"She was more than a dog or an animal. She was part of my family," Donovan said.

Donovan and her 4-year-old great grandson were playing in their front yard.

She said two men pulled up trying to sell meat Tuesday afternoon in a white van. When Donovan declined, they took off down the long private road she lives on. Mattie was right behind them.

"Those people... I was telling them to stop and they didn't stop they just sped up and hit her and flew out of here," she said.

Her great grandson witnessed the whole thing.

"How do you explain to a four-year-old that there's mean people?" she said.

Now she hopes they both can find some comfort. She says that would come easier if justice was served.

"There was no reason for them to do that," Donovan said. "Bless her little heart."

The Knox County Sheriff's Office Animal Control division went to the home to investigate.

They say it's difficult right now without a tag number for the van.

Donovan said it was a white van with the letters J and S on the side.
