A state barbecue championship is up for grabs in the first ever Rocky Top Hummin' and Strummin' Barbecue event.
The Rotary Club of West Knoxville is hosting the event to raise money for the club's local and international service projects. That includes buying dictionaries for every third grader in Knox County and paying for flu shots Saturday at West High School.
Dozens of teams are facing off in the barbecue challenge to become a state champion and the chance to go to the Jack Daniel's World Championship.
Organizers hope the event is the start of something big in Knoxville.
"Economic impact we can have from this when it grows is just open. The sky's the limit, basically," said Barbecue Director George Ewart.
The cook-off continues Saturday at the Episcopal School of Knoxville. It runs from noon until 5:30. Visitors will be able to sample and vote on the best barbecue and listen to live music.
