Monday evening, the U.S. Senate voted to begin debate on a bill that would provide funding to fix the Chickamauga Lock.
The lock is on the Tennessee river, just east of Chattanooga.
The funding is part of the Water Resources Development Act.
Senator Lamar Alexander estimates that the lock could more than quadruple it's cargo capacity to 6.7 million tons annually and also take more than 100-thousand heavy trucks off Interstate 75, if renovations can be done.
The Chickamauga Lock opened in 1940 and it's estimated 1.3 million tons of cargo pass through it annually.
