This weekend is the unofficial start to the summer boating season, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency wants to remind everyone to be safe.
TWRA will be out in full force making sure boaters have the proper identification, life jackets, and other safety equipment.
A few reminders if you choose to head out and hit places like Norris Lake this weekend..
- Make sure you have a wearable life jacket for every person on board
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy if you have an enclosed fuel compartment.
- Anyone under 13 must wear a life jacket at all times
- If you were born after January 1, 1989, you must have a TWRA- issued Boating Safety Education Certificate.
"For this opening weekend, the things we see often are equipment issues with lights or safety equipment not being on board the vessel. So, just check those things on board your boat and the number one thing i ask people to do is where a life jacket it will save your life," said TWRA Agent Roy Smith.
Also, TWRA reminds all boaters to not drink and boat.
Last year on this same weekend, they had no fatalities but did have dozens of Boating under the influence (BUI) arrests.
