A Claiborne County man is accused of robbing the Walmart store in New Tazewell at knifepoint Friday night.
William Rouse, 34, is charged with public intoxication, theft under $500, vandalism over $500 and aggravated robbery.
Rouse went into the jewelry section of the store, waited for the employee to help a customer, then snuck behind the counter and pried open the cash register with a knife, New Tazewell police said.
When the employee approached him, Rouse pulled the knife on her.
Rouse ran away with cash. New Tazewell police put Walmart on lockdown and blocked off the parking lot.
Investigators used surveillance video to get a suspect description and took Rouse into custody within an hour. Officers found him on foot.
New Tazewell police report Rouse has an extensive criminal history. He was released from jail Friday morning after an arrest for public intoxication.
