The gun control debate continues across the country and here in Knoxville.
Thursday, a small group of supporters for background check legislation rallied at Danny Mayfield Park in Mechanicsville. Their goal was to shed light on gun violence, from the Newtown shooting to a shooting in Mechanicsville last week that killed a young mother of four.
The ralliers are asking senators Corker and Alexander to take a stand.
"We want to stop the violence. The only way to do that is to start with positive legislative action. That action is in Washington," said Rep. Joe Armstrong, D-15th district.
Polls show 88 percent of Americans support increasing restrictions on background checks. Despite the support, the Senate voted down a proposal in April that call for increased checks at gun shows and online sales.
Many fear any gun control laws will hurt their Second Amendment rights.
