A mother and daughter from Campbell County are facing charges, after the sheriff says they were taking money from local businesses for a fake school fundraiser.

According to Sheriff Robbie K. Goins, Jennifer Overton, 34, of Jacksboro and Catherine Agee, 61, of Jacksboro, are charged with theft of property under $500 and criminal impersonation.

Sheriff Goins says the two were asking local businesses and people to write checks to them for a Jacksboro Middle School fundraiser that didn't exist.

Officials say if you are approached by someone asking for donations to a school-related event, you should first contact the school.  In addition, they say checks should be written directly to the school, not to the person collecting money.

Sheriff Robbie K. Goins said "Criminal acts against our children or our schools will not be tolerated, period. We don't want our business owners and citizens to stop helping kids school functions and sports programs at the detriment of a few who choose to prey on the vulnerable feelings of so many who help in our community. As long as I am sheriff we will vigilantly pursue, investigate and arrest these people."
