Dozens of East Tennessee veterans gathered together Wednesday to learn about fly fishing and enjoy a little barbecue.
Project Healing Waters is a program aimed at helping disabled veterans through trout fishing. Wednesday they hosted a meet and greet at Outdoor Knoxville.
Getting out on the water helps with the emotional and physical rehabilitation of the disabled and wounded veterans. Best of all, it's free.
One sailor we talked to said the bond she shares with her fellow veterans is unique.
"Veterans have a special connection that's just between us. We all experienced something different. It's a special connection it really is, whenever you get around other veterans the stories start going, the smiles start happening and it's just a different thing," said Jessica Callihan, US Navy veteran.
Callihan and her fishing partner took first place in a trout competition. She is the first female veteran and first Navy veteran to win it.
