Four eastern Kentucky residents are headed to federal prison for kidnapping and attacking a gay man.
The trial was the first prosecution under a 2009 expansion of federal hate crimes law to include assaults motivated by sexual orientation.
Anthony Ray Jenkins was sentenced to 17 years behind bars, and his cousin David Jason Jenkins was sentenced to 30 years. A federal jury found the two men guilty of kidnapping 30-year-old Kevin Pennington.
Two women who pleaded guilty to aiding the cousins in the crime are also heading to prison but for shorter sentences because they testified for the prosecution during the trial.
