Knox County is getting a hefty bill from the US government after it says the county did not use the federal health plan for its employees.
Rather than use federally recommended insurance, Knox County provides insurance to its employees independently, but now it will cost taxpayers $300,000 because of it.
Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett says the money now going to Washington could have gone to much better use in the county.
"We're self-insured, that's the infuriating thing about it. We're self-insured, we're doing what's right, what's responsible and folks in Washington are requiring us to pay $300,000. I mean, that's five or six teachers' positions," he said.
Burchett also said the money now going to Washington will help to fund the Affordable Healthcare Act, even though Tennessee opted out of the program.
