Gov. Bill Haslam/ GEORGE WALKER IV / FILE / THE TENNESSEAN
Governor Haslam signed into law a bill to help fight gang activity on Wednesday.
The so-called "gang-enhanced sentencing bill" changes the vague definition of "criminal gang offense" to a specific list of offenses like robbery, carjacking and drug possession.
If prosecutors prove a suspect committed one of the offenses as part of a gang and is a member of the gang, that suspect can get a tougher sentence.
The new law takes effect on Monday.
