A car crash lands a Knox County couple in jail on numerous drug charges.
According to Knoxville Police, the crash happened Wednesday around 5:45 pm at Broadway and Old Broadway. The man and woman in the car were arguing when the officer arrived to investigate.
The officer recognized the woman, Ty-shonna Sligh, 24, as the victim in a domestic assault a couple of weeks ago. At the time, she reported that her boyfriend shot at her, but then left the house and refused to cooperate in the investigation. But while at the house, located on Hoitt Avenue, officers uncovered evidence of drug activity. They called in members of the Repeat Offender Squad who got a search warrant and found small amounts of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, marijuana, $1200 in cash and a couple of guns.
The officer investigating the crash identified the man as the suspect in the alleged shooting, Thomas Byrd, 35. He was arrested on aggravated assault warrant issued during the shooting investigation.
Byrd also had numerous criminal court Capias' for Failing to Appear on 8 separate sets of criminal charges including 4 different Aggravated Assaults.
When he was arrested, Byrd had several rocks of crack cocaine, a small amount of marijuana, Oxycodone, and Alprazolam. He also had $1251.00 in cash.
Byrd was charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of Schedule II for Resale, Possession of Schedule VI for Resale, Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession in a Drug Free School Zone Schedule II, and 3 counts of Simple Possession.
Sligh was arrested for: Possession of Schedule II for Resale, Possession of Schedule VI for Resale, Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
After their arrests, officers followed evidence found in their vehicle to a room at the Express Inn on Dante Road. After getting a search warrant, officers found 1/4 ounce of crack cocaine, 1/2 ounce of marijuana, drug paraphenalia, and a stolen gun.
The pair will likely face additional charges.
