(WBIR-Cherokee Lake) A jet skier was able to save one man from drowning over the weekend in Cherokee Lake, but couldn't get to the other before it was too late.
According to Hamblen County Chief Deputy Wayne Mize, the drowning happened around 5:00 pm Saturday in Evergreen Cove. The men were apparently swimming with friends in the lake when they fell into a "drop-off" in the lake where the water suddenly becomes 20 to 30 feet deeper.
A nearby jet skier saw the two men in trouble. He was able to pull one man to safety, but when he returned for the second man, Carlos M. Diaz, 23, of Morristown, Diaz had gone under.
Members of the Hamblen County Rescue Squad recovered Diaz's body about 45 minutes later.
