Thousand Cankers Disease continues to spread
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The emerald ash borer has been found in Chattanooga.
That puts Hamilton County under quarantine for many ash wood products leaving the county.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported a single insect was found in a monitoring trap, but the city's urban forester also found damage to about a dozen ash trees in a park, indicating there are other borers in the area.
The discovery brings to 18 the number of Tennessee counties were where the pest has been discovered. Since it was first seen in Michigan two decades ago, the borer has turned up in 19 states.
The insect larvae tunnel under the tree bark and disrupt the tree's ability to draw up water and nutrients. An infestation can kill an ash tree within three years.
