The man who drove country legend Hank Williams Sr. out of Knoxville around the time of the singer's death has passed away.

Charles Carr died Monday at age 79. Carr was a friend of Williams' family, and the singer hired him to drive out of Knoxville following his last known tour stop of his life, in 1952.

After Williams collapsed at the Andrew Johnson hotel, Carr drove him to a New Year's Day concert in Canton, Ohio, but Williams died before taking the stage.

The director of the Hank Williams Museum described Carr as a man who "was always kind to fans of Hank."
