(WBIR, Knoxville) - The first ever Housetops 4 Haiti four mile run and one mile walk saw more than 100 runners Thursday morning.
Founder Lance Halseth said the wet weather was appropriate because it is exactly the type of weather they want to protect many Haitians from.
Money raised from the event will go towards putting roofs on houses in the city of Les Cayes, but they also want to help the local Haitian economy as well.
"We're not going to do the work or just give handouts. We're going to hire local workers. We are going to pour into their economy. We're going to buy all of our materials from the locals, and they're going to do the work," said Halseth.
Lance and his wife are planning to move to Haiti in October.
