Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett wants to make Knox County the first in the state to be a Purple Heart County.

The Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the United States armed services who was wounded or killed in combat.

Purple Heart Counties are being organized nationwide by the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Burchett says it's another way to show support for our veterans.

"I think it shows that we show respect to our veterans, show respect to the people that have given us this great freedom. And I've said many times, I owe everything in my life, but my salvation, to our veterans and to the people who went and fought for our country, and these are folks that were wounded in combat," said Mayor Burchett.

Knox County Commissioners will take up the resolution at its meeting next week.
