(WBIR) A local Girl Scout is earning her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, by teaching children ways to stay healthy.

Sixteen-year-old Sara Atkins hosted a Healthy Me Camp all week, teaching kids about healthy snack choices, hydration, and self-esteem.

Friday, she worked with the Thompson Cancer Survival Center to give kids a visual lesson on harmful UV rays and why we should protect our skin.

All campers made bracelets with beads that change color with the suns rays and change back to their original color with sunscreen.

Sara says it's important for kids to learn about sun protection at an early age.
