Tennessee's unemployment rate stayed steady at 8.5 percent for July, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Over the past year, the state's unemployment rate has risen from 8.2 percent to 8.5 percent.

From June to July 2013, Tennessee's total nonfarm employment decreased by about 2,500 jobs. The largest decreases occurred in administrative/support/waste services, state government, and accommodation/food services.

State officials said the rate was also affected by temporary education layoffs.

Tennessee's unemployment figures remain higher than the national rate, which for July 2013 was 7.4 percent, down two-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month.
