(WBIR - West Knox County) A local church is kicking off an effort to capture a sense of community and togetherness among its more than 8,000 parishioners.
All Saints Catholic Church in Knoxville on Sunday started a week-long prayer event.
Church leaders are encouraging members to donate an hour of prayer to the church from Aug. 18 through Aug. 24 in hopes of having continuous prayer for seven days straight.
The community effort will wrap up the weekend of Aug. 24 and 25.
That weekend, the church will only have two services, one at 5 p.m. Saturday and a celebratory outdoor mass at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The church said more than 2,000 people attended last year's outdoor mass.
For parish leaders, the seven day experience symbolizes a very special week for people to easily reconnect and help the church.
"It's a really, really wonderful way in which they can contribute to the parish. It's very simple, it's not money, it's prayer," Father Woods said.
Woods said he expects around 1,000 people to participate in the week of prayer.
