UT welcomes "Class of 2017" with school traditions

(WBIR - UT CAMPUS) Classes begin at UT on Wednesday. So, Sunday night, new students spent the day getting prepared for school by learning about UT's traditions.

Freshmen and transfer students took part in a number of activities, including the New Student Picnic, the annual Video Dance Party and Torch Night. Torch Night is an annual ceremony where upperclassmen formally welcome freshmen into the UT community.

Students told 10News they were still getting used to campus, but were excited about the year to come.

UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said he the school is expecting the Class of 2017 to be one of its best.

"Every new year is extremely exciting and I'm most excited about this year as I've ever been," he said.

UT recently announced that the Class of 2017 would be one of its biggest in a decade. It also one of its most diverse.
