Patient receives Meningitis vaccination/AP
Thousands of new students at UT are among the first who have to be immunized for meningitis if they want a place to live on campus. In July, a new law took effect that requires every Tennessee student living in campus housing to get the immunizations.
Four thousand incoming freshmen had one month to get the required shot. Eight hundred fifty students missed the deadline, so the student health center set up a clinic to help students get the shots they needed.
"This is a concerted effort by the housing and student health department to work together to come up with a solution so students didn't show up and not have a place to stay that night," said Jim Boyle, director of the student health center.
The Student Health Department worked alongside the housing department to notify students of the changes.
Officials say the new immunizations are part of being a student in Tennessee.
