Carson-Newman's 45-20 win over Glenville State vaulted the Eagles into the AFCA poll in the 20th position.

Carson-Newman was left out of the coaches' preseason picks for the first time in more than a decade, but wasted little time getting back onto the list with their road win.

The Eagles host Fayetteville State this Thursday night.

Tusculum received votes again in the poll after the Pioneers beat West Georgia on the road, 20-10.

Here is more from Carson-Newman on their entry into the AFCA poll:

After missing out on the AFCA Preseason Coaches' Poll for the first time in the poll's 11 years, the Carson-Newman Eagles jumped into the poll at No. 20 after a season-opening win.

The Eagles received 144 points in the poll.

Carson-Newman opened its season with a 45-20 win on Thursday night over Glenville State in Glenville, W.Va. The Eagles overcame four first-quarter turnovers to rush for 276 yards and six touchdowns

The Eagles are joined in the poll by South Atlantic Conference favorite Wingate at No.23.  The Bulldogs lost  to No. 14 Valdosta State, 34-38, in double overtime on Saturday. Sac foes Tusculum, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Mars Hill are all list in receiving votes.

Carson-Newman puts its No. 20 ranking on the line in its 2011 home opener on Thursday night, as the Eagle host Fayetteville State (N.C.). Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Burke-Tarr Stadium. For tickets, call (865) 471-3396.
