Tusculum College outfielder Alexi Colon has been named to the preseason Tino Martinez Award Watch List. The Tino Martinez Award is presented annually to the top baseball player in the NCAA Division II.

Colon leads the Pioneers in home runs (2), bases on balls (11) and is tied for the team lead in runs scored (7) as Tusculum is off to a perfect 6-0 start.

Colon posted some impressive power numbers in his first TC campaign in 2011. The Vineland, N.J. native batted .331, while leading the team with 12 home runs (4th in SAC/22nd in NCAA II), 62 runs batted in (3rd in SAC/8th in NCAA II) and 50 runs scored (5th in SAC/45th in NCAA II). The consensus All-Region and All-South Atlantic Conference standout finished with 60 hits and tallied 13 doubles and a pair of triples.

Colon has been named a 2012 Preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), as well as a Preseason All-SAC First Team selection.

Nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members. Omission from the initial list does not exclude additional players from future consideration.

The list will be updated with a mid-season release in April. Semi-finalists are scheduled to be announced on May 7th with the finalists to be named on May 21st.

After the finalists are named fans will be once again be invited to vote online at tinoaward.com to help determine the winner. The winner will be announced after the conclusion of the NCAA II Baseball Championship held in Cary, N.C. from May 26th to June 2nd.

Tusculum's record through its first six games matches the best start in school history, equaling the 6-0 starts by the 2007 and 2011 squads.

The Pioneers will host Shepherd University (1-1) this Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Tusculum's 2012 home opener. TC will open South Atlantic Conference play this weekend as they travel to Wingate University for a three-game series against the defending SAC Tournament Champions.
