Dayton, OH (Sports Network) - Vee Sanford recorded a game-high 18 points as
the Dayton Flyers defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 74-61, at UD
Arena in season-opening action.
Sanford was 7-of-10 shooting from the floor for the Flyers (1-0) and was
joined in double-figure scoring by Josh Benson and Kevin Dillard who
contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively. The latter also accounted for a
game-high 12 assists and pulled down six boards for the hosts.
For the Red Wolves (0-1), Kendrick Washington scored 15 points to go with nine
rebounds. Ed Townsel added 14 points off the bench in the setback.
ASU led by as many as five points early in the first half, but Dayton ended up
shooting 50 percent from the field as well as 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, en
route to a 34-27 lead at the break.
The Flyers continued there solid play in the second half, hitting on 56.0
percent from the field, while at the same time limiting the visitors to just
2-of-11 success on the perimeter in the 13-point decision.
Dayton was 50 percent from long-range, shooting 8-of-16, while the Red Wolves
made only 6-of-22 beyond the arc.
