West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - A.J. Hammons tallied his first-career
double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Purdue Boilermakers
dismissed the Penn State Nittany Lions, 60-42, in a Big Ten showdown at Mackey
Hammons also blocked a career-high five shots for Purdue (8-8, 2-2 Big Ten),
which had lost its previous two games. Ronnie Johnson scored 13 points, D.J.
Byrd had 12 points, and Rapheal Davis added 10 points in the triumph.
For PSU (8-8, 0-4), Brandon Taylor was the only player to score in double
figures with 11 points. The Nittany Lions shot just 25.9 percent from the
floor, and they have now lost a season-high four straight games.
Purdue shot 54.2 percent from the field in the first half as it opened up a
30-22 lead at intermission. Despite shooting only 8-of-30 from the field in
the opening 20 minutes, PSU kept its deficit to single-digits by draining
three 3-pointers and forcing nine Purdue turnovers.
The Boilermakers' field goal shooting pace slowed to just 37 percent after the
break, but they used a 15-4 run midway through the second half to pull away.
