Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - Bandja Sy finished with 16 points and eight
rebounds as the New Mexico State Aggies cruised to a 70-53 decision over the
San Jose State Spartans in a Western Athletic Conference tussle at the Pan
Daniel Mullings added 13 points for NMSU (12-8, 6-2 WAC) as it notched its
sixth consecutive victory. Tyrone Watson chipped in 10 points and four assists
while Sim Bhullar grabbed nine rebounds.
LaVanne Pennington paced the Spartans (9-9, 3-4) by scoring 16 points and
swiping five steals.
Despite shooting just 35.1 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes,
the Aggies took a sizeable 35-18 lead into halftime. SJSU trailed by 17 points
at the break after it made only seven of its 25 field goal attempts in the
NMSU outscored the visitors, 12-2, in the paint and converted 12-of-18 at the
charity stripe in the second half. Although the Spartans heated up to hit 48
percent of their attempts from the field including 5-of-8 from 3-point range,
they were unable to narrow the margin after the break.
The Aggies held a dominant, 46-24 edge in rebounding on its way to the win.
