Lawrenceville, NJ (Sports Network) - Daniel Stewart posted a double-double
with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Rider Broncs knocked off the Iona Gaels,
67-62, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference battle at Alumni Gymnasium.
Tommy Pereira scored a team-high 14 points for Rider (11-9, 6-2 MAAC) which
has won five straight. Also in double figures for the Broncs were Jonathon
Thompson (13) and Anthony Myles (12).
Lamont Jones scored 20 points but missed all five of his shots from beyond the
arc while turning the ball over five times for Iona (12-7, 6-2). Sean Armand
netted 15 points, Tavon Sledge contributed 14 and David Laury finished with a
double-double of 10 points and 17 rebounds as the Gaels' six-game winning
streak came to an end.
Both teams shot below 40 percent in the first half. Iona hit on just 31
percent of its field goal attempts while Rider was a bit better at 37.1. The
Broncs hit 6-of-12 shots from 3-point range in the period to take a 35-30
lead at the break.
Rider rallied from a five-point deficit midway through the second half to take
a 59-57 lead with 5:30 remaining. The Broncs were then able to hold on for the
win in the final minutes as the Gaels missed nine straight field goal attempts
down the stretch.
The Broncs had a sizable 46-32 edge on the boards and outscored Iona 17-8 in
second chance points.
