Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Cleveland Melvin posted 20 points and nine
rebounds, leading the DePaul Blue Demons to an 80-71 victory over the
Milwaukee Panthers at U.S. Cellular Arena.
Melvin shot 8-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-6 from long distance for
the Blue Demons (3-1). Brandon Young recorded 19 points, seven rebounds and
six assists, while Jamee Crockett tallied 10 points.
Matt Tiby logged a double-double for the Panthers (4-2) with 20 points and 11
rebounds, knocking down 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Kyle Kelm
contributed 16 points on 6-of-8 from the field, and Austin Arians pitched in
Both teams struggled to get their offenses going in the first half. The Blue
Demons shot 39 percent from the field and missed their two free throw
attempts, while the Panthers made 33.3 percent of their field goal tries but
went 6-of-7 at the line. The game was knotted at 32 at halftime.
The Demons came out firing in the second half, however, shooting an impressive
60.7 percent from the field and making 11-of-13 free-throw attempts.
Attempting to keep pace, the Panthers made 14-of-16 at the stripe, but their
strong field goal percentage (.500) included an awful 1-of-9 from 3-point
range. DePaul held the lead throughout the entire latter half of play.
The Blue Demons grabbed 38 rebounds, ten more than the Panthers, and shot an
excellent 9-of-18 from beyond the arc.
