St. Thomas, VI (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Smotrycz posted a double-double as
the Maryland Terrapins held on for a 56-52 victory over the Providence Friars
to claim the 2013 Paradise Jam title at the Sports and Fitness Center.
Smotrycz finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Maryland (4-2). Dez Wells
added 13 points of his own.
Bryce Cotton netted 19 points and LaDontae Henton and Tyler Harris each
chipped in 10 for Providence (6-1).
It looked as if the Terrapins would run away with the decision at halftime as
they held a 33-21 lead entering the locker room. Maryland held the Friars to
only seven field goals during the entire first half while netting 13-of-34
from the floor on the other end.
In the second half the Terrapins were not as successful offensively, hitting
on just 33.3 percent of their field goal tries. Providence cut its lead to
just two points twice in the final two minutes but couldn't complete the
comeback, shooting just 31 percent from the field in the frame.
Maryland outscored Providence in the paint, 32-20.
