Washington, DC (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals made a change to their playoff roster Tuesday, replacing injured pitcher Jaime Garcia with pitcher Shelby Miller.

Garcia suffered a left rotator cuff strain during Monday's National League Division Series game against Washington and could miss the rest of the postseason.

Under MLB rules, he will have to sit out at least the National League Championship Series and would be eligible to return for the World Series, if the Cardinals advance.

In Game 2 of the NLDS against the Nationals, Garcia allowed a run on two hits with three walks in two innings before exiting with a sore shoulder. An MRI exam revealed the severity of the injury.

The 26-year-old left-hander spent more than two months on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation before returning in mid-August. He was 7-7 with a 3.92 earned run average in 20 starts this season.

Miller had one win in six games for the Cardinals after being recalled in September and made his first big league start. The right-hander, who will turn 22 on Wednesday, struck out 16 and pitched to an ERA of 1.32 over 13 2/3 innings. He threw six innings of one-hit ball in starting the regular-season finale against Cincinnati.
